THE DIGEST

🔥 The Yacht Club Locals Fought Over Just Burned Down 🔥
The Toronto Humber Yacht Club burned down early yesterday morning in a three-alarm fire that brought more than 100 firefighters to the scene. The building, which had operated for 70 years along the Humber River, was destroyed by 6:30 a.m. with a fully collapsed roof. The cause is still under investigation. The club had been a flashpoint in the community in recent years, with locals pushing back on its expansion beyond its approved footprint, including 60 gazebos, extra parking, and a gas dock stretching a third of the way across the river. Whatever your feelings about the controversy, it's a significant loss for the waterfront.

📬 18,000 Etobicoke Addresses Are Losing Door-to-Door Mail 📬
Canada Post is converting door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes across the country, and Etobicoke is in the first wave. Postal codes M9V and M9W, covering around 18,000 addresses, are set to make the switch in late 2026 or early 2027. Canada Post says the change is part of a five-year national rollout affecting four million addresses, and that most packages will still fit in the new boxes. Larger ones or signature-required deliveries will still come to your door. Community consultations on mailbox locations are expected before anything gets installed. Get ready for a mailbox makeover! 📬

🏫 Your School Board Just Got a Lot Bigger 🏫
The TDSB is cutting its number of elected trustees nearly in half, from 22 down to 12, ahead of this fall's municipal elections. For Etobicoke, that means the current Humber River-Black Creek ward is merging with Etobicoke North to form the new Ward 1, one trustee covering a whole lot of ground. The current trustee for that area isn't happy about it, calling the change "an affront to democracy" and warning that one person representing up to 250,000 people is a bad deal for local communities. He plans to run again anyway. The board is also under provincial supervision, which means newly elected trustees won't actually have governing power unless that supervision is lifted after the October 26 election.
